Looking to satisfy some personal curiosity here. I am a former USN air traffic controller and have just finished reading "The Guts To Try" by Col J. Kyle USAF (ret). To say it made me hot is an understatement. A severe case of the red-a**. Don't agree with his conclusions about it at all. I know a USN RH-53D set a distance record in '79 by refueling from an ANG HC-130. I'm wondering how common aerial refueling of Sea Stallions was in the Naval community by mid '80 so my questions are: 1. Approx. how many KC-130s did the USMC have in inventory during the '79-'80 time frame? 2. When did the MC begin aerial refueling H-53s? Col. Kyle essentially accuses the RH-53D aircrews, predominately Marine, of cowardice in the face of the enemy. My view is that they were given the mushroom treatment, dark space and recycled nutrients, until systemic failure occurred. Plainly put mission sabotage by inter-service rivalry. Not necessarily willfully, but the end result was the same. Col. Kyle makes no bones that he wanted the Navy/Marine contingent out of the mission from day one. Since a key part of all of this is the AF trying desperately to "develop" aerial refueling equipment for the RH-53Ds, thus eleminating the complex and dangerous Desert One scenario, why didn't they ask the Marines? Were the Marine KC-130's regularly refueling H-53s by early '80? I believe they were, but am not positive. Col. Kyle doesn't even mention considering, much less asking for, these assets. Why not? Was this a case of "if the AF doesn't have it we'll do without rather than spread the glory"? Have more arguments but this complete mental block about existent MC tanker assets is a key one I think. This might seem like ancient history but may be critical in the future. With the AF given permanent control of the Space Command how will those assets be doled out. Most any combat command from here on out will live or die by the quality of support it gets via satellite; comm, control, or intell to name but a few. Not trying to give anyone heart burn by mentioning the elephant in the living room, but am a firm believer in ,"to thine ownself be true." An honest evaluation of the effects of inter-service rivalry, beyond good natured kidding, will be critical as military assets become leaner and more focused. It can only be guarded against from within the services; and only when it is acknowledged that it can and does cost missions and servicemen's lives. Thanx

Greetings and thanks ~~~ .. just noticed that "someone" put me back in the public directory! While there, I counted about 70 members under "S". Of those about 10 are short timers (4 years and less). About 60 are long timers (5 years +). Somehow or other there should be a way to get more short timers signing up. Geesh, it only costs 15.00 !! Given my interactive experience mixing it up with general "internet Marines" of all ranks (outside associations and groups), I might be able to figure a plan to get more non-career transporter Marines on-board. Like I've mentioned before, I don't really feel like a Marine because my 4 year time ended so long ago. There are thousands of US non-career Transporter Marines out here, aren't there? Who knows, maybe a way can be figured to get 800 or more of us to feeling comfortable enough to join. Given your "bullshit" comment (smiles!), "bums" (more smiles !!) comes to mind. Said of McKay, in his memorium by one of our field grade officer members, "a bum's bum, and he never gave a bum a third chance, colonel or private.". Yup, here's to finding ways to get more of us "bums" on board. I'll make a profile* shortly. And, given my normal and usual ways in hacking, experimenting (IE transitional character ways), just be patient until it's trimmed out. First appearances aside, my way is not of "bullshit", boot licking or name-dropping. Even my father screwed up about me, his first born: "You won't make it in the Marines, yer to insubordinate!". We heard from Nanette and Will's surgery is over. He had an epidural hematoma the size of an egg. Also has a crack on his skull but they said not to worry about that. When Louise talked to her she said he was in and out of consciousness so he was doing ok at that point. She also said he won't be too happy to find out that they shaved his head. Thanks for all prayers, I'm sure he still has a ways to go but at least the surgery is over.

He was trying to get a flashlight that Nanette had on the refrigerator. Surgery will be performed at Camp Lester in Okinawa where he and Nanette should be now with Bill to follow. Don't know much more than that. Louise and I plan on going to either Guam or Okinawa just aren't sure exactly when.

The wife and I had been out of the area for awhile. This is the first opportunity I have had to check the bulletin board. I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Rocky Arocha. Every couple months or so we would call one another via land line and chit chat about the old days (and you old guys). I knew he had medical problems, but he would never dwell on it nor complain about it. Back when (way back when) Rocky made LT he was tasked with the job of OIC of the detachment in DaNang. He then tapped me on the shoulder and said I want you to come with me as my MaintChief. It was great working with him in that position and I will never forget him... Break...Break... G.James Sherman...you still out there? I passed by your area in Tenn. a short while ago. Tried to call you, only got the answering machine. Left a message... Semper Fi...John Lukondi

Hello out there, I must apologize to most of you as I have been off line for about 6 days as my computer crashed during a storm we had roll through Texas. The news letter for June mailed today under the new U.S. Postal rates for a Non-profit Tax exempt organization. I held it back until I got the final approval letter. If you downloaded the news letter earlier in the week you may not have got all of it. There was a couple of blank areas that should not have been. Brian, bless him, has redone it and got it back on the web site. Also, just to clarify Bernies statement about the Friday night reception. That party will last about 4-5 hours. They will only serve the Hors de overes from 1800-1900. The bar will be open the entire time. I guess it is a good thing I have the data base on line now as it would have been wiped out in the storm. Now all I had to do was fix the computer, go on line, and there it was. Just like I left it. Good for me I am sure. Wally Joiners family were a big help in folding and stuffing, stamping and labeling envelopes with the Reunion info. Did not get much from Wally, but he is a good supervisor. Some things never change. Thanks to all who helped in Arkadelphia, You too Wally. I did get the first Reunion Reservation today. The forms were mailed from Arkansas last Tuesday and today I got Red Pauls back in the mail. Good job Red. The Reunion Registration form is on line now also. So there are no excuses. I am trying to catch up on all the questions about logging in now. Have patience, you are probably next. Don't forget to get the hotel reservation in soon. Semper Fi, Con

Hi Con. This is really a true story, so help me. I think the membership might enjoy it. I know I have probably posted a few whoppers but they all really happened. Just lucky I guess. This message was in response to a fellow jarhead who was in the trenches. We were thinking back to what we were doing in November of 1966. It goes like this. "Well, I pulled out my old log book to see what I was doing in November 1966. It was a pretty good month for me actually. Started out on 2nd with a 3-day trip to Bangkok with some Code 7s, the jewel of the orient. A million round robins from Danang (flares). A couple of trips to Chu Lai and Hue/Phu Bai culminating on the 17th with a flight to the Phillipenes for an engine change where we got stuck until December 2rd because of "bad weather." Actually the pilot found a really nice lady in town and apparently didn't want to leave which sure was OK by us. Damn do I remember that trip. Finally ordered back on threat of disciplinary action. The poor guy was so shook up took off in the middle of a "real typhoon." He had us waiting at the terminal 24-7 until he found an itty bitty hole. Off we went. One of the damdest flights in my life. Within minutes we were engulfed in the most terrible weather I have ever experienced. We were fighting almost 100 knot "miscellaneous" winds at times but of course this guy was now a man with a mission. WE HAD TO GET BACK TO DANANG. Luckily we were light and had a lot of feul, even the outer wing tanks that we seldon used. Had some passengers though that were not happy campers. Actually neither was the crew. Flew off into the "dark and stormy night," horrendous turbulence. We were up, down, sideways and all kind of crap. I think maybe even inverted but I might be exagerating a little. I remember looking out my little porthole on the starboard side and noticed that there was a beautiful green circle forming at the end of the prop arc on my side. This green circle grew before my eyes over a period of about 15 minutes. It extended out over the engine nacelles and out to the tip of the wing and then back across and over the cockpit windows where it joined with the same thing that was happening on the other side. (Saint Elmos fire I found out later from the meteorologists.) Needless to say it caused us a little bit of consternation because we did not have a clue what was going on. Just when we got to glowing a nice bright green we were hit by a horrendous lightning strike which knocked out almost everything powered by electricity. Thank gawd it was in an old dependable plane (R4D-8) that did not depend on electronics for survival. We had 2 internal cumbustion engines that worked off of magnetoes and the pilots' input went through real wire cables to the controls. Very primitive thank gawd. Had nothing except a magnetic compass to work with which hadn't been calibrated since who knows when in the middle of terrible winds that were taking us nobody knew where. The co-pilot was trying to navigate by dead reconning but, in those conditions, dead reconning just doesn't work too good of course. Here we were, somewhere over the South China Sea heading generally west (we hoped) and running out of feul. The pilot dropped down below the overcast to try and figure out where we were. With the continuous lightning strikes we could pretty well see what was below us. Just about the time we approached the coast. (Some coast somewhere.) The low fuel alarms started going off. I heard the really creepy conversations between our pilots about setting down on the beach. Only problem was we didn't know where we were. It could have been Red China for all we knew. Then, in very dramatic fashion, some how was able to make contact with an Army radar station . Within minutes we were triangulated and, low and behold, we were between Chu Lai and Danang. The winds, our copilots great dead reconning, and, first and formost, our total blind luck, had brought us back. They vectored us to Danang and here we came. 0300. Terrible weather. No radios, no nothing, not even landing lights. We came in waving our wings like crazy to try and let everybody know we had no communications and somehow nobody ran into us. We ran out of gas trying to taxi back to our area. God really does look out for fools and children. For the most part though, Novemeber 1966 holds some of my most cherished memories thanks to our great command pilot.

Received the following about Rex Rucker from Jim Whetstone: Subject: Rex's Ruckers Surgery, From James Whetstone Hi Jim. This is Bev. Just thought I would let you know that Rex went into the hospital yesterday for surgery. We were shocked. The spot on his lung was cancer. They took out almost half of his lung. He is really in a lot of pain today. Then he had a heart problem this morning. He went into defib and they had to start another IV and give him a whole bunch of medicine. The surgeon came in and told us that we have to wait for the results of the biopsy. He feels he got it all, but hopes it isn't fast acting. If it is they will have to start something right away. I just pray with all he has been through that it isn't, because he is still on hold for his bladder chemo. They won't give it to him until this surgery is over and he is recovering, depending on the results. Just thought I would let you know, that you probably won't be hearing from his for a while. I don't know how long he will be in the hospital. God love him, he has such a positive attitude----it's the Marine in you guys. Talk to you later. I am so tired I can hardly see straight. Semper Fi. Jeanne Biggane died on Mon.the 29th. She is well known in the MAG 25/SCAT membership as the one who was instrumental in establishing the membership data base for the fledgeling reunion association 50 years ago. The little retirement present I awarded T.L with 9 months before retirement is thirty years old today. Time sure does fly by. Rick Schoener is listed in the USMC site but have not heard from him and his family yet. You may remember that he flew with you at El Toro before going on to be CWO. He is back in Baylor Hospital in ICU and can not have any plants, flowers, etc. Cards and letters can be sent to Mikes home address at: 9338 Emberglow, Dallas, Texas 75243. It seems that Mike was in intensive care for about 3 weeks and went home for a week before he was returned to emergency and back into intensive care. How quick we slide. After losing Walt Turner this past year, a former COwho had command of 252 when the Corps first got he 130, and June Crowel, one of the best supporters of transporters that ever landed at Cherry Point, I received an email today that we lost another former Marine that was really pro-transporter. John wasn't a member of MCATA because he wasn't eligible. But John was never-the-less one of us. John retired as a MSgt of Marines; he was only 54 years old today when he passed away. So everyone wonders why I am rambling on about a guy that was never in the MCATA. John was the head of the House Committee at the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 141 when a handfull of the current membership decided to have a meeting and form what is today the MACATA. With no funding, we had a challenge, but John helped us as much as he could. He allowed us to have our meetings there every month and gave us happy hour prices (50 cents a soda for you that don't imbibe). He was a true Marine and when he said Semper Fi, you knew he WAS always faithful. The services for John Hendricks are Friday March 8, 2002, time to be announced. Branch 141 of the FRA will have details tomorrow' I will be leaving Ft Lauderdale Thursday the 7th and returning Sunday the 10th. If anyone from the Cherry Point area gets this before then, I hope to see you while we are in the area for this unfortunate circumstance. Semper fi, Chris

Hi agian fellow Marines! Just a short note to apoligize for my stupidity in posting the message about Rick Nelson twice or three times. If I would have been thinking clearer I would have included Rick Nelson's nickname (NELLY-NO GAS) now you all should know whom I was talking about. Transporters, received two messages from Jack Bergquist which I will post now: Guys Leslie asked me to pass this on to you all and that's what I'm doing. Such a terrible loss. I will miss him. Jack Bergquist Greetings, all of you, our friends..... I am saddened by the message I am sending to those of you who I did not phone earlier with the news: Rickwas admitted Saturday morning, 2 March, to a local hospital with the beginnings of congestive heart failure, you may remember that this had happened to him once before in early 1999, and that hospitalization was the beginning of his use of injected insulin, also. As the day progressed, it seemed like the situation was under control, and he was moved from the ER to a regular room. I went home at 10pm and the hospital called me about 11:30pm to return as he had suddenly gone into cardiac arrest. He was just talking with one of the floor nurses when he seized, and, by the time I arrived, he had been in cardiac arrest several times. He was moved to the ICU, and the code blue call went on all night. I had made some phone calls, and Rick's sister, Joyce, and her husband and daughter arrived from Orlando about 4 am to be with me. Rick seemed to stabilize somewhat around 7 am and we came to the house to get a bite to eat, returning to the hospital around 1030 am. Rick's blood pressure was even lower, and his heart rate falling. The IV's were delivering several sorts of heart medication, but could not stimulate the heart to work any harder. The repeated cardiac arrests also led to the failure of his lungs and kidneys. He was comatose and unresponsive. Finally, at 11:29am the life support was withdrawn and he died. Rick's sister is still with me until Rusty flies in tomorrow night, and some other great friends are stopping by in the weeks ahead to visit, as well. Rick is being creamated, and the ashes will be put in an urn made of compressed sea salt, so that when he goes on his last dive, there will be nothing left to pollute the ocean. I ask all of you to pass along this mesage to anyone who might have known Rick, our e-mail address book was vandalized by the compuserve 2000 set up and I am missing some of our addresses. Thanks for all your kind thoughts, I miss you all. Please keep in touch, Leslie Red, Ricks full name was Garnett (Rick) Nelson Flight Engineer 353,152 etc. Yes, He was a member of MCATA. I tried to post on bulletin board twice but it didn't take. I E-mailed Con and asked him to post it if he could. He was a real great guy and one of my best friends. He had worked for the past 15 yrs in Saudi for Lockheed Inter., Kockheed/Arabia and finally for Saudia Airlines as a flight engineer. He will be missed. SEMPER FI, John

Just received this message a few moments ago and am pasting it so that you can get it from the best source. "His Wife". Semper Fi, Red Friends and Family, A short note to let you know that Floyd has been hospitalized again, with a collapsed lung. This time it is the left side. I was preparing this morning to take him to the VA Long Beach when he let me know he couldn't make it. I had to call 911. The paramedics here were impressive. I was still on the phone with the operator and could already hear the sirens. He was taken to La Palma Intercommunity Hospital emergency room, in La Palma, CA, where the collapse was diagnosed. They inserted a tube to inflate the lung and once he was stabilized the admitted him. He is resting more comfortably now. When he can be moved he is supposed to be transferred to the VA. He can be reached at 714-670-7400, Room 314, bed 1. I will keep you posted.

Al Kerst let me know about this site and I just joined. There are a several names in the memembership roll that I remember from the long ago days. Worked in the engine shop, MAG-35 in 1956, R4Q-2's. Served with MARS-17, 1956-57 and crewed one of the R4D's there (with Jim Pitts) after working with Jim Boyle's crew changing engines on the R4Q-1's. Later was with AES-12, Quantico, and was crew chief on a C-117 there. (Flew with Greg Makepeace) Once had Chesty Puller as a passenger when we lost an engine. Vietnam with H&MS-16 first time, then with HMM-165 second time. Would like to hear from the Marines that I served with.

I will post all his info on line later, but his E-Mail is rflem16970@aol.com. He looks good and is in good health. he sends his best to all. We had a great time talking about the many trips he made on the VIP ship and he also mentioned the pod fire on good ol 808 which as I remember those at Cherry Point refered to as Burning Bob. More later. Semper Fi, Con

Lest we Forget Osama Bin Laden, your time is short We'd rather you dies, then come to court Why are you hiding if it was in God's name? You're just a punk with a turban; a pathetic shame I have a question, about your theory and laws; "How come you never die for the cause?" Is It because you're a coward who counts on others? Well here in AMerica, we stand by our brothers As is usual, you failed in your mission; If you expected chaos, you can keep on wishing Americans are more focused and stronger than ever; Your death has become our next endeavor What you tried to kill, doesn't live in our walls It's not in buildings or shopping malls If all of our structures came crashing down; It would still be there, safe and sound Beacuse pride and courage can't be destroyed; Even if the towers leave a deep void We'll band together and fill the holes We'll bury our dead and bless their souls But then our energy will focus on you; And you'll feel the wrath of the Red, White and Blue So slither and hide like a snake in the grass; Because America is coming to Kick your ASS!!!

Members, Here is an update on Bud Wildfang. Carol and I joined several other MCATA membrs in Oklahoma City for the Celebration of Arlyne's life which was held on Tuesday 29 January. Bud is in need of some TLC. I would suggest cards, letters, anything which may tend to get his mind off the subject of losing his loving wife of over 60 years. Bud joined Carol and I along with Jim Hardy, Charlie Smith, Art Debolt and Bernie Bersano for dinner on Monday night. After dinner Bud came over, put his arm around my shoulder and said, " you know, it felt kind of good to get out and away from the house. It even helped to get a laugh or two in". So I think you can see, there is a real void in his life right now and it will always be there. Right now it would help to try and not think about it. I know manything you can do would go a long way to helping Bud get through this time in his life. he was leaving today to go to Omaha and spend the week end with his grand daughter Melissa and watch the super bowl game. On Monday they are heading for N. Dakota for about 10 days. Then back to Midwest City. A nice stack of mail for him to read on his return would be great. I am sure he would sincerely appreciate it. Others who made the trip to Midwest City were, Bob and Satch Lurie, Wally and Clara Joiner, RJC and Jo Barber. Take care, My personal best to all. news letter is in the mail. Semper Fi, Con Shuck

Here's the latest I have from Terry O'Neil and Peggy Powell about the funeral services for Steve Bryson. On Saturday, 26 January, 02 at 12 noon there will be a memorial service in the Montgomery Civic Center downtown. The amount of condolences in the town has lead local officials to believe this is the only place which will accommodate the number of people expected to attend the service. I've been told by one individual (but haven't confirmed) that the Governor of Alabama has declared Saturday as "Steve Bryson Day" and ordered all flags to half mast for seven days. After the memorial service there will be a grave side service. Katrina, Steve's widow has requested full military honors at the grave site. Terry said he DID NOT believe it was going to be a private service and if it was all Marines would surely be welcomed by the family. More on that when I get confirmation. If anyone is planning to go down early. Terry has provided the Embassy Suites close to the Civic Center as a place to stay. The number is (334) 269-5055 ask to speak with Debbie and tell her why you're coming in the area and she should help with the room rates. Right now there are nine or ten of us from around the Marietta area who are planning on driving down and coming back the same day. According to mapquest it's 3 hours 15 minutes, 176.2 miles. This is to Steve's mothers house address from my address in Marietta. The head count on spouses who are planning to attend has not been determined, so our count may change. I'll coordinate with the local fellas before the end of the week about where and when we will meet, if we are going to meet and caravan down together. Terry should be in Montgomery tomorrow, Katrina is already there, and Peggy Powell will be there on Friday. The individual who is escorting the remains will be in Dover tonight and should be in Montgomery tomorrow evening. If I've left anyone out it means I don't have their email address so please forward this information to them. That's all I have right now and I've tried to be as reliable and accurate with the information as possible. Here is the mothers address and phone number. If you can't make the trip maybe you could call. I've already place one condolence call and his mother seems really surprised and moved. I don't have a florist name, funeral home, or any numbers for that area. Deloris Bryson 201 Conrad Street Montgomery, AL 36110 Phone: 334-263-2155 The funeral home is Phillips-Riley, in Montgomery (334) 263-0477, 2284 West Fairview Ave. Also Greenwood Cemetery will be GySgt's Stephen Brysons final resting place. If anyone would like send condolence emails for the family you're welcome to send them to me and I will print them out and ensure they get to the family. That's all for now and again if I've missed anyone please pass this along, Jerry

I discovered this article in Capt. Bancroft's hometown newspaper. It is reprinted in its entirety: "January 12, 2002 Two, possibly three, memorial services will be held for Matthew William Bancroft, the US Marine pilot killed this week when his plane crashed into a mountain in Pakistan, a family friend said Friday. The first will take place Thursday in San Diego for all seven Marines who died in Wednesday's crash, said Bancroft's friend Sara Evans Parker. The service will be held at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station at 2:30 PM. A second service for Bancroft- possibly held out of the area- will take place at a later date. The family hopes to also hold a service in Burney, at a date to be determined, Parker said. Additionally, a fund has been set up for Bancroft's daughter, 9-month-old Maddie. Anyone wishing to help should make out checks to Bailey Madison Bancroft and send them to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Attention Natasha Miller, 1615 South Mission Road, Fallbrook, CA, 92028. Or, to use a credit card, call (800) 726-1222. The fund was set up by America West Airlines, the employer of Bancroft's wife, MaryEllen. It's for his daughter for when she gets older," said Parker. Bancroft grew up in Burney and graduated from Burney High School in 1990. He then attended the US Naval Acedemy, graduating in 1994 and joining the US Marines. Bancroft, whose stint as a Marine was originally scheduled to end in October, was sent to the war in December. In addition to his wife and daughter, Bancroft leaves behind two stepsons, Sean Johnson, 13, and Christian Johnson, 12. Reporter Alex Breitler can be reached at (530) 225-8344 or at abreitler@redding.com."

Thanks for the tickles and new(?) editing options, Con. Yay, I dropped in and edited my profile! Cool. ..and if you go in and read it, please note a couple of questions I have---first of which is how about a longer text box for addresses? Here's why: My home address (too long to fit) is @ http://www.angelfire.com/wa/redwoodsigns/erlstart.html My work address (fits just fine) is @ http://www.SemperSigns.com Now, it fits just fine, it makes no sense to me to put that one in unless the other can be listed, too (from which anyone can read & see just who I might be). This is important because my physical residence / work address, ph# and etc. are listed on most of my "work" internet pages. Yup, then, anyone can "copy, paste and click" off to see. Members, from what I hear out there most of you are pleased once you manage to work your way in to the data base. Please bear with me as we work out the kinks. The nbiggest proble right now is there are to many of you with the same first name--middle initial, so, we will be looking at something a little different. Go ahead and try to get on, however, look at the public directory or your newsletter lable. First name and middle name or initial if used must be there. Use your last name for a password. If all else fails send me a note and we will assign something different for you. Semper Fi and a very happy joyous, blessed hjoliday season to you and yours. Con and Carol Shuck

ATT@home has informed me that probably within the next 48 hours my on-line service will go down and I may be without for a few days while they get their act together. For those of you that E-mail me or make a request on a posting I may not be able to respond if I don't know it is there. So bear with me on this one. I will advise the new Email as soon as ATT lets me know what to do. If you do have any requests that can be made by phone please call me. Have a great Holiday Season, Semper Fi, Con

Marines, I would like to thank you for all of your wishes and prayers for Jim. It meant so much to see all of you at the funeral, I know Jim would have been honored to know you were there. The honor guard did a wonderful job. At the funeral the minister had all Marines stand-it was a beautiful moment. I am making an album of Jim with all of you pictures and stories. I would like to have stories (funny are the best) if you could send them to me or maybe a picture or two. I plan to have this ready for the next reunion. Thank you all again and Semper Fi, Phyllis

Was just going thru my membership directory looking for an address and was wondering how many of the 779 names listed in the directory requested/purchased the directory???????? How far in the hole did we go on this project or did we?? Its nice to see the net back up and running again. The directory sure does come in handy and someone put in a lot of time on this. Haven't heard anything about the directory since I received mine in July this year. A big G O O D J O B to whoever did it. Semper Fi.......Rex.

Hi people!!! It has been brought to my attention by Bernie Bersano that if anyone tries to get ahold of me by phone using our transporter directory that the area code is wrong. He was right... Chicago courts changed our area code from 708 as stated in the directory to 847 998-0472. Sorry if it caused any problems for anybody. By the way HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ALL. Semper Fi. JB
